Dr. Tiago Moreira has joined the Animal Welfare Program for the past four months, from September to December, as a visiting scientist. Visiting scientists contribute to the exchange of ideas throughout the program, conducting their own research work while also engaging in activities with students, post-doctoral researchers, and faculty during their time in residence. Learn about Tiago’s research interests and how they intersect with the AWP!
I was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and my affinity for farm animals began at an early age. I achieved a dream of mine when I graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in 2010, followed by completing both my Master’s and PhD degrees in Animal Science at the same university, with a study abroad period at the Technical University of Denmark.
My professional journey includes veterinary roles addressing sanitary issues on farms and a job with a livestock communication company in Brazil’s dairy sector. However, I always wanted to work in academia and research. I served as a professor at Universidade Vila Velha and am currently an associate professor at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, teaching Ruminant Clinic/Production Medicine since 2019.
My research endeavors, often in collaboration with colleagues, focus on topics such as lameness, hoof lesions, digital dermatitis, transition period, respiratory diseases, and tick fever. During my PhD, I discovered the work done by the Animal Welfare Program at UBC, and since then I have been closely monitoring their studies, aspiring to forge partnerships to advance similar initiatives in Brazil.
The opportunity to be a visiting professor at UBC has been immensely valuable, fostering enriching exchanges, generating numerous ideas, and initiating collaborative projects. I look forward to exploring further partnerships to promote parallel initiatives in Brazil.
