ABOUT
I’ve been riding horses continuously since I was 7, and during my time spent in equestrian stables and competitions, I’ve witnessed many animal welfare issues. As a computer science student, I couldn’t stop thinking about how technology could help with these problems. That was the spark behind my interest in research about the automated monitoring of animals. During my master’s in Iran, I enjoyed working on my thesis entitled “Using Machine Learning for Automated Pain Recognition in Horses”. And currently, I am focused on automated monitoring of resource use in dairy cattle.
I love the Animal Welfare Program at UBC because we are a very international ‘FAMILY’ supervised by the frontiers in this research area. Also, from the computer science perspective, data is the key to successful artificial intelligence projects and in the Animal Welfare program, we can achieve high-quality data from our UBC Dairy Education and Research Centre, which is soon turning into the largest robotic milking research facility in North America.
