Featuring VIRS Student – Francesca Costenaro

Francesca Costenaro is currently completing her Master’s degree in Animal Science and Technology at the University of Padua. Francesca grew up in a family that manages a dairy farm and remains closely connected to this sector.

How did you first get interested in animal welfare?

My family has a farm, and I’ve always worked there. Over the years, the European regulation on animal welfare has changed a lot and I have noticed the effects on our farm. This prompted me to learn more about what animal welfare means and what are the best methods to evaluate and improve it.

What did you learn from your time with UBC AWP?

I learnt that animal welfare includes many different aspects, and that in order to ensure a good level of welfare it is necessary to have a broad and self-critical vision.
