A 50-year milestone in animal welfare

This summer David Fraser and Ian Duncan celebrated the remarkable milestone of the 50th anniversary of writing the first text-book chapter on farm animal welfare. The chapter was published in the 1975 edition of The Behaviour of Domestic Animals.
David and Ian worked alongside David Wood-Gush (1922–1992), a pioneering figure in the field, to create this chapter. Their research which focused on the behavior and well-being of farm animals, marked a significant shift toward more humane and ethical farming practices.
Five decades later, the research conducted by these leading figures in the field of animal welfare remains remarkably relevant. David Fraser is currently Professor Emeritus in the Animal Welfare Program at the University of British Columbia. Ian Duncan is Professor Emeritus at the University of Guelph.
