On April 4th, 2025, Dan gave an invited, plenary presentation to the 18th Congress of the Brazilian Society for Science in Laboratory Animals (SBCAL) in Uberlandia Brazil; SBCAL is Latin America’s foremost meeting for bringing together researchers, veterinarians, technicians and the allied industries to improve the care and handling of laboratory animals.
Dan spoke about the science of refinement research, and how this can succeed in changing practices in labs. His talk highlighted recent research by AWP researchers, including PhD student Maya Bodnar’s work on euthanasia and refined handling practices.
During this same visit to Brazil, Dan also visited with former AWP visiting scholar Prof. Tiago Moreira at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Belo Horizonte. While at UFMG, Dan, Tiago and UBC alumna Dr. Bruna Silper co-taught a special one-day short-course on dairy welfare.
